DJ vs Band MythBusters

MYTH #1: DJs can play more variety of music.
FALSE: Our song list is from the Top 200 list of songs that thousands of DJs vote on as being the most requested and played. They encompass all varieties of music such as classic rock, disco, 80s music, Motown, funk, country, oldies, and more.

MYTH #2: DJs have over 10,000 songs, from which you may choose.
FALSE: DJs do have a large library of music, but how many songs are actually played at a typical reception? On average about 45. (That’s 3 hours of music.) And out of that 45, the same, highly requested, songs are played at every wedding. You can be sure that JAVA has those same popular songs already included in our song list!

MYTH #3: DJs are best at being MCs.
FALSE: Though DJs can be great MCs, so can a band. In fact, because we specialize in vocal performance we know exactly how to speak in front of a group with appropriate timing and inflection, and how to keep the flow of the reception moving smoothly.

MYTH #4: DJs are cheaper.
TRUE: Well, okay – they generally cost less overall. On average a great DJ will run about $1000-$1500. But for only about a thousand more, you will get an entire band! There is nothing that matches the energy and excitement of a live band. The return on your investment will be ten-fold!

MYTH #5: DJs play continuous music, and bands stop a lot.
FALSE: A good wedding band will not stop between songs – except to make pre-arranged announcements. One song will flow into the next with no gaps, so the dance floor will stay packed. During set breaks – which are only 15 minutes – JAVA will play any music you request – like a DJ! The best of both worlds.

MYTH #6: DJs can control their volume, and bands are always too loud.
FALSE: Not always. Some bands do play too loud – no getting around it. BUT not us – or any other high quality act. We are meticulous about keeping the volume comfortable. We have a professional sound man controlling our volume at all times, and can even use electronic drums and no amps if necessary to keep the volume as low or lower than a DJ.

MYTH #7: Bands won’t sound like the original artist.
FALSE: A good wedding band will take the time to play the songs as closely to the original as possible. Just listen to the band demos first to make sure their sound is what you want. JAVA has many demos on their website, and we’re confident you’ll like what you hear.
